Layout

set of commands to arrange windows on desktop

Layout editor

configuration dialog to edit layout file (.TLF) accessible from:
  • Ctrl+Alt+L to run layout editor with automatic enumeration of desktop windows
  • Ctrl+Shift+L to open empty layout editor (skip enumeration, fast mode)
  • Settings (or Ctrl+Alt+Shift+L)> Layouts> Edit



Command

set of parameters required to start application in specific mode

Command settings editor

configuration dialog to edit settings related to specific application saved in layout accessible from Layout editor> Command settings


Window

separate viewing area on a computer display screen being part of a specific application, known as graphical user interface (GUI).
Single application may have a set of windows on screen.

Windows list

configuration of window settings for every window which belongs to this command

set of parameters required to identify window and arrange it on desktop

Window settings editor

configuration dialog to edit corresponding window settings accessible from Layout editor> Command settings> Window settings


Class name

text string related to specific type of windows (e.g edit control has "Edit" class name).
Different applications usually have different class names assigned to their windows.

Window name

known as window caption. Text string is usually (but not always) visible in the hat of the window. In common case it contains the name of the currently loaded document or file.

Window position

window coordinates, size and state (normal/minimized/maximized) on specific display/virtual desktop.
Multiple window positions assigned to window allow user to apply them one-by-one on the every next layout open.

Display

specific monitor device attached to PC

Desktop

specific virtual desktop (available in Windows 10)

X, Y

left top position of window (pixels/percents)

Width, Height

size of window (pixels/percents)

Regular expression

is a sequence of characters that define a search pattern.
Extremely useful when actual value is unknown or may vary. It is used in Class name and Window name editors.
".*\.txt - Notepad" matches any Notepad window with opened txt file.

Hotkey

key press combination to instantly call corresponding functionality, e.g Ctrl+Alt+X to close all shell windows.

Finder tool

Finder tool is a window's data extraction tool designed to do the following:
  • create layout command
  • create window settings
  • create position
  • test window name
  • test class name


Trayicon

small application icon located in the Windows Taskbar (area near the clocks).
Trayicon does the following:
  1. Show colored icon when application is in awaiting state
  2. Show gray icon when application is in paused stated
  3. Show animation when opening/closing layout or enumerating desktop windows
